The contribution of fisheries sector in the economic development of agriculture dependent Bangladesh is very important and undeniable. According to the Bangladesh Economic Survey 2020, the fisheries sector contributes more than 3.52 percent of the country's GDP and more than a quarter of the agricultural GDP (26.36 percent). About 80 percent of the animal meat in our daily diet comes from fish. In the last three financial years (2016-17, 2018-19 and 2019-20) the total fish production was 42.8, 43.64 and 45.03 lakh metric tons.
Besides, in the last three financial years, by exporting 6935.45, 63171.32 and 80945.39 MT of fish and fish products, foreign exchange of Tk 4309.94, 4250.31 and 3975.15 crore has been earned respectively. Bangladesh ranks 3rd and 5th in the world in fish production in inland open water and fish farming in closed water (FAO, 2020). Bangladesh ranks second in the world in terms of growth rate of fish production in inland open water (FAO, 2020).
